WALK EXPLORE CREATE

5 September to 7 October 2023
Studio open to visitors on each Saturday 10am to 1pm or by requesting an appointment with the artist at other times - Open Studio Artists Talk on 7 October, 12noon - 1pm.

I am a landscape painter, living and working in West Cork. For the last number of years the primary focus of my work has been the Ilen River which flows through Skibbereen and out to sea at Roaring Water Bay. My main area of research to date has been the journey of the river from the town to where it meets the sea. During my residency in Uillinn I would like to concentrate on becoming more familiar with the Ilen's urban surroundings and ecology. My work is process led so I am curious to see what will be revealed from a four week period focusing on exploring on foot, photographing, sketching and painting this riparian landscape. While I know certain locations of the river very well I would like to collaborate with local individuals for more knowledge of the out of the way and often hidden areas of the river. Journaling/writing about my daily encounters is also an important part of the process for me so I will also be considering that aspect of my practice during the residency.

Public can engage in Murran's process through her weekly blogs which will be shared HERE. Janet is also inviting the public to ask a question, via social media or leave a note at her studio. The questions will be answered in an open stuidio talk on Saturday 7 October, 12noon where she will also share her progress on the body of research material she has gathered during the residency which will be the essence of a future solo exhibition.

Janet Murran’s love for the beauty in everyday, sometimes overlooked landscapes drives her paintings of West Cork rivers, farmlands and towns. A graduate of DIT/ Sherkin Visual Arts Degree, she shows her work with the Taylor Galleries in Dublin, Blue House Gallery in west Cork and most recently she was awarded two residencies one in Tyrone Guthrie in August 2023 and a second in Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre in Sept 2023. She was selected to show her work in the 190th RHA Annual Exhibition. Her work is in collections in Ireland, UK, Australia and in the USA.
