Irene's Ghost is Iain Cunnigham's first feature documentary, and is about his search for information about his mother who died when he was three. Having been told very little about her, or the circumstances surrounding her death - family stories range from an unexplained coma to a heart attack - Cunningham embarks on a journey of discovery. What Cunningham discovers about his mother is heart-warming thanks to the affection that so many people still have for her, but also tragic, as the source of his mother’s condition would today be seen as postpartum psychosis – a topic not very well understood at the time of her death in the 1970s. We believe this film covers a number of important topics from psychosis to mothers and their mental health to how mental health was viewed and treated in the past versus the present.
