How to emotionally navigate the passing of time? A coming-of-age story, this dance and theatre piece is presented in the format of a black and white film, with influences from the worlds of cinema, literature and music.

A dance and theatre piece shown through the format of a black and white film with influences from the worlds of cinema, literature and music, it tells the story of coming of age. From the fantastical hopes and wishes we collect throughout childhood we taste a sample of adulthood.

The artists navigate the universal experience of growing up, asking how would a 7 year old imagine yourself to be as an adult? What would an 87 year old think of what you did in your twenties? How can you possibly begin to balance the conflicting emotions of looking forward and creating these idyllic, heavenly futures for ourselves, whilst trying to build the most wondrous present while equally reminiscing on the nostalgia of childhood.

The work is presented as a romanticised trailer for being a grownup culminating in a theatrical duet accompanied by an explosion of slapstick comedy, physical theatre and dance.

ABOUT NAF Dance
NAF Dance is headed by Nóra Ní Anluain Fay and continuously strives to create theatrical explosions on stage, highlighting the magic in the mundane and the marriage between comedy and tragedy. The choreographic debut, ‘Let Them Eat Cake,’ was the Dutch nomination piece for the Szoloduo Festival 2022 in Budapest. This cemented the movement language and tone of physical theatre and slapstick comedy. The wondrous worlds such as royalty, reality television and growing up are all explored and moulded through a cinematic lens and coated with an exterior layer of physical theatre and slapstick and humorous, eclectic, magical worlds begin to unfold. It’s through this that I can appeal to a wider audience than those solely interested in dance, as I can make the abstraction of the dance world accessible.

Sean O'Toole spoke to Nóra about her work. Read the blog here.
